Food Rules: Simple Guidelines To Eating Healthy

Here is help to keep your healthy eating plan simplified with these easy to remember, practical food guidelines to make your best food choices and meal plans for your family to eat right! Come find easy food rules for healthy eating that may help you feel and look your best.

When one of my daughters was diagnosed with multiple food allergies many years ago, our family became well acquainted with the enormous place food holds.  Food rules.  It dictates a lot.  Even our social lives can be altered as most celebrations are centered around food.

After the news, our lives took a major new focus. There were many extra precautions, extra preparations, so much to learn, many to educate and so many worries!  And, at the time, we may not have known it, but it was the spark plug to a more aware path.  Although the 13 foods she was allergic to and not allowed to eat were ingredients in basically all the other foods on the store shelves, leaving very few easy choices, what seemed like a crisis turned into a catalyst.

It was a time of condensed learning. In fact, it was learning on speed dial because we had no other choice than to scrutinize every food label, teach ourselves to administer needles and teach many others to as well! But, one huge advantage of having to focus so intently on food is that it we became better schooled and certainly more cognizant of the effects food has on our bodies - the good and the not so good.  Thus, food rules,  Yes, it does. It has quite the impact. Come find some simplified rules for healthy eating that resulted from our experience examining food so closely that may help you feel and look your best, too!

10 Simplified Healthy Eating Rules I Live By

The food we consume is one element to leading a healthy lifestyle.  The information on those food choices can overwhelm, though, does it not? What diets to follow, what foods to stay away from, which ones to include and how to best prepare it.  So, for me, I like to keep it simple and pared down.  I have a few parameters I like to stay within most of the time when it comes to food choices, menu planning and what I keep in our kitchen for the family to eat.  I thought these food guidelines may help you and your family, too:

1.  Eat lots of plants and seeds.

The studies say the same thing - eat a plant based diet and the benefits are numerous:  improved blood pressure, decreased risk of heart disease, lowered cholesterol, better weight control, lower cancer rates, better moods, nicer skin, slower aging, etc. Yes, I want all that! How about you?

Don't miss this: I have a great anti-aging plan to keep you looking, feeling and acting vibrant!

2.  Choose nutrient-dense plants have lots of shades of green and other bright colors and consume a variety of them.

The green in a plant usually indicates chlorophyll - a life sustainer.  The many other colors present in fruits and vegetables indicate the different antioxidant phytochemicals they contain. Many of these chemicals help protect us against various diseases, but each in a different way. So, a variety is key. Each time I shop for vegetables and fruits, I make sure to mix it up from the last time I shopped to ensure a variety is eaten.

Don't miss this:  Here are some healthy and wonderful green salads to prepare easily at your house tonight!

3.  Avoid foods that have sugar listed as the first three ingredients.

I steer away from foods in boxes and cans most of the time, but if I do consume them, if sugar or a form of it is listed early on, then it probably contains a lot of sugar and too much of it.

Here is help to keep your healthy eating plan simplified with these easy to remember, practical food guidelines to make your best food choices and meal plans for your family to eat right! Come find easy food rules for healthy eating that may help you feel and look your best.

4. Do not consume any artificial sweeteners.

I just stay far, far away from the fake stuff.  More chemicals.  Besides, they give me a headache.  That can't be good.

Don't miss this:  Chewing gum is loaded with chemicals and artificial sweeteners. Find other simple alternatives to keep your breath its freshest.

5.  Keep it whole.

Half, or more than half actually, of the preservatives in some canned and boxed foods I have no idea how to pronounce or can keep track of the studies on them (as the information on them always seems to change).  Thus, I just stay away from them generally speaking.  Food closest to its most natural state is best.  Our bodies then know what to do with it. I feel a whole (note the pun!) lot better when I eat this way, too!

6.  Eat when hungry and stop when full.

Gluttony,  It is one of the seven sins, after all.

Don't miss this: Here is how thin people stay that way.

7.  Enjoy a treat, but make it occasional.

When you decide to indulge, go ahead and enjoy every last bite of it. No guilt, what. so. ever!  But keep it to every now and then.

Don't miss this: Here are loads of healthy treats to satisfy that hankering for something kinda naughty!

8.  Do not eat out too much.

Love to cook; hate the dishes. But if you eat out a lot, you really can't account for everything that is going in your mouth.  If you prepare it, you know what is really there and what went in to make it.

Don't miss this: I have lots and lots of easy, healthy, yummy dinner ideas covered for you right here.

9.  Go organic.

Some foods have lower levels of pesticide than others, and it is not always possible to find organic foods or afford it.  Further, when eating out, it is really difficult.  But, when you can, choose it.

10.  Do not preach.

By all means, provide a good example to others and share information, if interest is there.  But, if you go too academic on others about food, your wanting to help them has been negated.  You could create a negative impression when you really want to encourage them to eat healthier.  Be gentle, everyone!

How To Create Your Healthiest, Whitest, Most Sparkling Smile!

This post is brought to you by Tom's of Maine. The content and opinions expressed below are that of The Health-Minded.

There is nothing like a warm smile upon meeting someone new. It raises spirits all around - the one giving the smile as well as the one receiving it. But to keep it looking good and actually something to smile about, stepping up your oral hygiene routine could play a crucial role.

It is true that how you care for your teeth and gums can create a sparkling smile that anyone would want to see, but that is certainly not all it can do for you! Your dental routine, or lack of one, may even determine your risk for other serious diseases. Keep reading to see what the latest research is saying on that as well as lots of tips (you may not have heard of) to care for your teeth the best way.

The Link Between Your Oral Hygiene and Potential Cancer,  Heart Disease, and More

It may sound like a far reach to think that how you take care of your teeth and gums could affect cancer or heart disease risk as well as diabetes and other diseases. But, according to some latest studies, it could be so. Here are some of the latest findings on how you choose to take care of your teeth and gums may affect your overall health:

  • Inflammation that starts in the mouth seems to weaken the body’s ability to control blood sugar and play a role in diabetes.

Don't miss this:  Sleep has a lot to do with heart health, too. Find here just how many hours sleep can help you keep your heart beating strong

Five minutes a day is all it takes to your whitest teeth, freshest breath, and keeping serious disease like cancer, diabetes and heart disease at bay! Learn all the facts here for your best oral hygiene routine that can keep your smile bright and filling-free!

5 Minutes To Your Freshest Breath, Whitest Teeth, and A Healthier Body

In pursuit of flashing a great smile, having fresh breath and keeping serious disease at bay, our daily dental care habits can really help create care-free dental check-ups and a lot less drilling - if at all!

Five minutes a day is all it takes to follow a basic daily oral hygiene routine that can do so much for your health and your appearance! That's it - five minutes! And, the cost for supplies to do it are very low as well!

A basic routine for you and your family includes brushing at least twice a day (after every meal even better) for two minutes at least and flossing at least once. But, there are other really important points, too, to keep that smile bright and filling-free:

1. Toss the tobacco.

Smoking and other tobacco habits turn your teeth yellow and harm your body in a number of ways: throat, lung, and mouth cancer for one and tar from tobacco forms a sticky film on teeth. That film attracts bacteria that promotes acid production that can cause gum inflammation and tooth decay as well.

    2.  Swish with water after drinking wine, tea, coffee, and sugary drinks.

I really don't think sugary drinks should play a role in our lives much at all, but if you choose to consume them, they cause cavities. Regular consumption of wine, tea and coffee can harm tooth enamel, too, and the acidity can dissolve the tooth structure and increase dental staining. Taking small sips and rinsing with water when you're done drinking is a good habit to form with all of these beverages.

      3. Choose safe and effective basic tools for whiter teeth.

Check out these important ABC tools when choosing your next toothpaste, toothbrush, and dental for best results:

      A.  Toothpaste

There are lots of tooth whitening toothpastes on the market but many contain preservatives and enamel-harming additives. Here is a new one I was asked to review recently that you may want to try as well: Tom's of Maine Luminous White Toothpaste, part of the Made to Matter collection only available at Target. A bit about why I like this toothpaste is here:
      • This toothpaste is safe for enamel - so critical -- but whitens teeth!
      • It is gluten and paraben-free.
      • It is a good choice if you are cavity prone as it does contain fluoride.
      • This toothpaste is free of artificial dyes, fragrances, flavors and preservatives and never tested on animals.
      • It is a product that could easily be part of any family's pursuit for healthy living. With Earth Day falling this month, it is a reminder that as this article says: what we choose to purchase and put on our body does end up in our water supply as well potentially harming our planet and each other.  With smarter and well-informed purchases, we can create change - not just on Earth Day, but every day!
      • If you are interested in purchasing this toothpaste or several other natural personal care products, please roll on down to the last section of this post for Target coupon discounts.

      B. Toothbrush

Here are some important points about choosing a toothbrush and how to keep it germ-free:
      • Choose a soft-bristled brush to not injure your gums but still clean the teeth effectively.
      • Replace your brush at least every few months and especially after you have been sick to not reinfect yourself.
      • Store your toothbrush upright and keep it where air can circulate to dry the brush quickly.
      • As odd as it may sound, per the American Dental Association, pop your toothbrush in the dishwasher regularly to disinfect it.  I try to do this once a week.
Don't miss this: Find my super quick method to clean all my brushes to avoid infections that I use often right here.

        C. Dental Floss

If you floss, great! If not, begin today as it is one of the best things you can do to take care of your teeth and perhaps the most important daily habit to prevent gum disease.  It only adds a minute to your routine (included in the five daily minutes mentioned above) and once you start, you can't imagine NOT doing it.  Specifically, regular flossing can do this for you:
        • Flossing helps prevent tooth decay by removing plaque and debris that sticks to teeth and gums where the toothbrush can't reach.  My hygienist always flosses after she polishes my teeth, but I always floss first so that I can more easily brush away anything that I was not able to reach with my toothbrush. What about you
        • Dental floss polishes the tooth's surface providing a brighter smile!
        • Regular flossing helps control bad breath.
Don't miss this:  Do not ingest harmful chemicals for fresher breath! That stick of chewing gum is a bad idea! Find much better alternatives for fresh breath here.

        4. Show extra care if a baby is on the way.

If you are pregnant, pay extra attention to your teeth and gums as some studies show a link between untreated gum disease and low-birth-weight babies. Further, changes in hormone levels during pregnancy can cause inflammation of the gums and gingivitis (red, swollen, tender gums) and may require extra care.

Don't miss this: Thinking of having a baby soon? Get your body ready for your best possible pregnancy with these tips.

          5. Keep hydrated.

A dry mouth is bad for your teeth and breath. Saliva washes away cavity-causing, bad-breath making bacteria and neutralizes harmful acids.

              6.  Try ancient practices.

Oil-pulling may seem trendy but it is an ancient practice of Ayurveda medicine that may promise a healthier mouth and gums, whiter teeth, fresher breath and less bacteria in the mouth and, therefore, in the body. Here is a bit more about it:
              • Oil pulling is basically swishing about 1 tablespoon of oil -- usually coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil -- in your mouth for about 20 minutes and then spitting it out.
              • I tried oil pulling some time ago but found it a bit cumbersome to add to my morning routine. However, I am planning on trying it again for shorter increments, as I have read research like this on oil pulling benefits that has further convinced me. Even a few minutes should offer some benefit and I can build up from there, depending on my morning time rush!
              • Coconut oil may be the best choice as it has the added benefit of lauric acid, which is well-known for its anti-microbial agents.
              • Whatever you do, do not swallow all that swished stuff! And, don't spit it down the sink either as the oil could clog your pipes. Just discard the used oil into a tissue and deposit it in the nearest trash can.

Easy Health Tip: Best Cooking Oils For Your Kitchen

Don't misunderstand.  I love olive oil like the rest of you!  But, many, many other wonderful and healthy cooking oils abound. And they are just waiting for the pour, the drizzle or the saute to bring great flavor and great health!

Follow below to learn which cooking oils you want to include in your kitchen and why, which oils are best to heat with for important health reasons (and which are not!), which oils have the healthiest fat profile and lots more to help you stock your healthy kitchen the best way!

Learn an easy health tip here about which healthy and delicious cooking oils you want to include in your kitchen and why! Find which ones to stay away from, which oils have the healthiest fat profile and great taste and lots more to help you stock your healthy kitchen the best way!

Why Cooking With An Assortment Of Oils Is Best For Your Health

There are many reasons to have an assortment of oils to cook your favorite dishes. Come find why you should expand your selection and include some oils over others:

              1.  Mix it up!

Don't choose the same cooking oil each time. Cooking oils all contain various health benefits; thus cooking with an assortment of them allows exposure to the variety of minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients as well as healthy types of fats they contain.

              2.  Not all fats are the same.

All oils contain fatty acids, but some contain more of the better ones like omega-3s and monounsaturated fats.

              • Research shows strong evidence that the omega-3 EPA and DHA can help lower triglycerides and blood pressure. They may even aid with other conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, depression, and more.
              • Monounsaturated fats are heart-healthy because they maintain good HDL cholesterol levels while lowering bad LDL cholesterol levels.

              3.  Some oils have a beautiful profile.

Here are some of the oils with a better fat profile:
              • olive oil:  Of course, it had to make an appearance on the list.  But, the accolades are well-deserved.  It is very low in omega-6s and high in flavonoids, a great health-promoter.  It is not a good choice for heated cooking and best saved to use at room temperature for salads, pastas, sauces and yes, even as a moisturizer.  Go cold-pressed.
              • avocado oil:  It is high in vitamin E and unsaturated fats and contains loads of potassium. It is a great choice for heated cooking.  See the next section on this critical point.
              • rice bran oil:  Both the World Health Organization and the American Heart Association state rice bran oil has the best possible composition of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated fats compared to all other vegetable oils. This balance of fatty acids helps reduce cholesterol levels in your body because the beneficial forms of cholesterol actually inhibit the harmful forms of cholesterol from binding in the body.  It is another great choice for heated cooking.
              • lard and duck fat:  I am listing this, but honestly have not cooked with it myself.  But it is moderately high in monounsaturated fat and low in omega-6s.

Don't miss this: The Mediterranean diet uses olive oil frequently. Find great recipes here for cooking the Mediterranean way!

Why Knowing The Smoke Point of Cooking Oils Is Critical To Your Health

The smoke point of an oil or fat is an important consideration when cooking as making the wrong choice can negatively affect your health.  The smoke point is the temperature at which the oil gives off smoke and then starts to burn and go rancid. Here is why that is important to pay attention to:

              • Rancid oil forms harmful free radicals in the body, which are known to cause cellular damage and have been associated with diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and other conditions like cancer, too.
              • Digestive issues can result from consuming rancid oils.
              • Rancid oils can deplete the body of vitamins B and E.

Here are some important facts about smoke point and the various oils for you to make the wisest choice:

              1.  Look closely.

The smoke point of oil depends also largely on its age and purity - hard to determine on your grocery store shelf.  But, remember these two points when shopping:

              • Generally speaking, the lighter the color of the oil, the higher its smoke point.
              • It is important to check out the expiration date on the bottle of oil before using.

              2.  You may need to begin again!

Oils that contain high smoke points are healthier to cook with and do not ruin your dish by burning it. If you leave the pan on the stove to heat the oil and then look away and glance back to find it smoking (guilty!), start over.  Always discard oil that's reached its smoke point along with any food with which it had contact as it now has gone rancid. So not good for you.

              3.  Go for the double advantage.

Some of the oils with the highest smoke point and ones that contain some great health advantages (listed in previous section) are as follows:
              • avocado oil:  520 degrees
              • ghee: 375 - 485 degrees (depending on purity) See below for more on its potential health advantages.
              • rice bran oil: 490 degrees

How To Store Your Cooking Oils For Best Health

Take care of your cooking oils as they are expensive and can make or ruin your dish. Here are two easy but important considerations when storing and buying your oils:

              1.  Keep them covered, cool and dark.

The decorative bottles are pretty next to your range, but it is best to store your oils in a cool, dark place away from the heat. This protects them from breaking down or even going rancid. Remember to only buy oils that have been stored in dark glass bottles or tins and preferably in a store that has a quick turnover in their merchandise.

              2.  Some oils like it really cool.

Some oils should be refrigerated like flax, sesame and hemp oils.

Four Other Healthy Cooking Oils To Consider

The choice of healthy cooking oils is endless and expanding every day (a good thing!), but here are a few that I am using lately and why.  If you are interested, I have linked to products I use and have found to be delicious and of excellent value.

              1.  Ghee

Ghee has traditionally been used in Ayurveda medicine in place of butter fat for potential health benefits like the ones below:

              • It is thought to naturally lubricate connective tissues in your body aiding in flexibility.
              • Ghee's anti-inflammatory properties are also to believed to speed the recovery of wounds and heal blisters.
              • It may also serve as a powerful agent in digestive health, When used in place of butter, oils and other fats, ghee may help to reduce the acid in your stomach while protecting and repairing your stomach lining.
I do not use it a lot but I find I need very little of it when I do.  The buttery flavor is a rich addition to dishes.  If you prefer to make it yourself, this post contains some great ways to make flavored ghee to enhance your meals.

              2.  Macadamia Nut Oil
Macadamia Nut Oil has a wonderfully buttery finish and contains some unique healthful properties like these:
                • Macadamia Nut Oil contains palmitoleic acid, a specific monounsaturated fatty acid that may speed up fat metabolism, thus reducing the body’s ability to store fat.
                • It is also high in magnesium, manganese, copper, and iron.
Don't miss this: Try this recipe with macadamia nut oil that includes a powerhouse vegetable.

                3.  Coconut Oil
I bake with coconut oil, saute with it sometimes, use it in dessert sauces, and lately even adding it to my coffee.  Buy the extra virgin and unrefined.  Here are some facts about it:

                  • It is high in saturated fat but it can actually increase HDL levels in your cholesterol profile (a good kind) and reduce heart disease.
                  • It contains lauric acid which also has antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral properties.

Don't miss this: I use a spoonful of coconut oil every day on my skin as well and have had great success in it clearing up a rash that would not go away.  Here are 5 other healthy spoonfuls I reach for every day!

                  4.  Walnut Oil

I like to use this walnut oil with salad dressings or a smidgen over plain organic yogurt with berries. Here is why:
                    • This oil is high in omega 3s.
                    • It contains a high amount of vitamin C and E as well as zinc, selenium, magnesium and copper.
It can be heavily refined though, so check out the label.

                    • Energy drinks are something I steer far away from as many are full of chemicals and stimulants. But, a vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO drink I was sent recently in the form of coffee beans was designed by UCLA trained neuroscientists to boost your brain and improve focus and concentration.  The company claims nutrients in the products are designed to help reduce stress, improve certain cognitive functions and maintain our brain’s health, too. If you are pressed for time, you can easily include protein like a hard boiled egg you make the night before or some plain, organic Greek yogurt with berries and a drizzle of raw honey. Add a generous handful of nuts for a fast, filling breakfast and a healthy dose of fats, too.  Smoothies are a great choice with a tablespoon of healthy nut butter added, as well.

                    3.  Choose a soothing or energizing playlist or radio station.

Depending on what kind of mood you want to instill in yourself the next day, set up a listen to play during your commute to the event as well as at home getting ready. Steer away from news programming.  It is hardly light these days!

                    4.  Get it together!

Follow these steps to get organized and make the morning go so, so smoothly:
                    • It is not a good day to try a new cosmetic or skin routine in case you react adversely.  Keep your beauty routine to the familiar and save any new products for another day.
                    • Assemble anything you need to bring along for your big day (including a travel umbrella if rain is called for). Ensure you have needed cash for parking or subway cards.  Slip in an easy, non-stain producing healthy snack to pack and some water to bring along.

                    5.  Tape a positive message or affirmation to your bathroom mirror for the big day!

Let that positive message be one of the first things you see when you awaken!  The next morning, say it aloud. let it sink in and bath in positivity!

                    6.  Create a good night's rest with these steps:

                    • Skip the alcohol the day before as it can disrupt your sleep later.  Instead hydrate really well to avoid dehydration and sleep disturbances because of it.
                    • Do not partake in any big decision making or conversations the night before your big day as they could affect your sleep.  Tell your family and friends to please shelve any inquiries or problem-solving, if possible, to after the event when you are celebrating your amazing success.
                    • Do not use sleeping aids.  They can make you groggy the next day - not what you want on your big day! Instead consider an herbal pillow spray like this one that I love that soothes you to sleep and has no side effects.

                    7.  Consider meditation or prayer.

Meditation and prayer can clear your mind and help you dig deeper to find purpose in the next day's event.  You may want to repeat this in the morning, too!
